History Tour of Fairmont

Join us for an unforgettable journey through the rich history of Fairmont, where every stop tells a unique story. Our tour will take you to Heritage Acres, the Hobo Camp Trail, the Martin County Veterans Memorial, and the informative Martin County Historical Society. Discover the fascinating past of this vibrant community and the stories that shaped Fairmont!

Head to Heritage Acres in Fairmont. At this agricultural interpretive center, you’ll find historic farm structures, a schoolhouse, a train, antique tractors, and more! Learn about the history of local farming at your own pace, and wander through the beautiful gardens. This outdoor museum is perfect for kids, too – there is plenty of green space for running around, and old-school playground equipment to play on.

On your way out of Heritage Acres, wander down the Hobo Camp Nature Trail, nestled between Lake Sisseton and George Lake. You can park in the lot just off Lake Ave next to the lake on your way out, or if you have the time, you can walk from Heritage Acres. On this short trail, learn about how hobos lived and traveled the Fairmont rails in the 1920s-1950s (look for the sign just off the floating dock, near the railroad bridge). The trail also leads through a beautiful nature study area with mature trees and wildflowers.

Next, stop at the Martin County Veteran’s Memorial. This beautiful, quiet memorial honors the service of current, past, fallen, and missing soldiers of Martin County. On display overhead is restored Cobra Attack Helicopter 327. Read more about this particular Cobra’s fascinating war history, and the missions it was involved in (1968-1971) on the MCVM website.
