How Did Fairmont Get Its Name?

Nestled in the heart of Martin County, Fairmont, Minnesota, boasts a fascinating history.  Martin County was part of the Louisiana, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota Territories between 1805 and 1858. Martin County was actually established before Minnesota became a state on May 23, 1857, taking portions of Brown County and Faribault County.

The story of Fairmont’s name is as charming as the city itself. The town was laid out by the Des Moines and Watertown Land Company in October 1857, and the original name was “Fair Mount.” The name was inspired by the rolling hills that embrace the area’s lakes, reflecting the natural beauty of the surroundings. However, the name “Fair Mount” soon evolved into “Fairmont,” a change that solidified the town’s identity.

Fairmont’s charm and scenic beauty, which inspired its name, continue to shine brightly today.
